COLLEGE RECRUITING

Regularly our staff makes the effort to talk with coaches on both the men’s and women’s side at all NCAA levels to be mentored on best practices. These coaches share their opinions on recruiting, ideal player make-up, stories from their programs, and also, some tips to help better prepare our juniors for the college game. Stay tuned regularly to our Mistwood Golf Club YouTube channel, and the “College Coach Connection” playlist.

College Placement

Over the past decade, the Mistwood junior programs have a legacy of helping student athletes achieve their goal of playing college golf. Every player’s goals are unique and our staff is dedicated to guiding each individual player on a path to meet their goals.

Frequently Asked Questions

How early should you start the recruiting process?

Starting early is key! Ideally, begin your recruiting journey during your freshman or sophomore year of high school. This allows you to build relationships with coaches, improve your game, and showcase your progress over time.

What’s the difference between D1, D2, D3, and NAIA?

D1 is the most competitive with scholarships. D2 balances sports and school, also with scholarships. D3 prioritizes academics, no athletic scholarships. NAIA offers flexibility and scholarships at smaller schools.

If I’m a good player regionally, will coaches will recognize me?

While regional success is impressive, relying solely on that exposure isn’t enough. Actively reach out to coaches, build your profile, and showcase your achievements to stay on their radar.

What events should I play in to get recruited to my dream school?

Focus on nationally ranked junior tours like AJGA, Hurricane Tour, or local USGA qualifiers. Strong performances in these events demonstrate your skills to coaches evaluating talent at the next level.

How do my current high school scores compare to the college scores I’m seeing?

College courses are often longer and more challenging. A strong high school average in the low 70s generally aligns with a competitive college golfer, but every program has different standards. Research your target schools for score expectations.

What do you do if you texted/emailed a certain college coach and he/she isn’t calling you?

Don’t get discouraged! Follow up with another email or call after a week or two. Coaches are busy, and persistence shows your genuine interest. Include updated scores, tournament results, or key highlights to keep your outreach fresh.

Should the coach, parent, or player be first to contact a college coach?

The player should always be the first point of contact. Coaches want to hear directly from athletes to assess their communication skills, motivation, and personality. Parents can step in later for additional support and details.

What’s the right fit for your game?

Consider factors like course difficulty, climate, team culture, academic programs, and coaching style. Finding a school that aligns with both your golf goals and personal growth is crucial for long-term success.
